About Sierra Vista Habitat for Humanity©

Habitat for Humanity© Sierra Vista Area, Inc. is a faith-based grass-roots organization affiliated with the worldwide movement of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI). Our mission is to use local resources (both labor and financial support) to eliminate poverty housing in the Sierra Vista Area. We recruit help from individuals, churches, and businesses who work together in equal partnership with families in need.

How does Habitat for Humanity© accomplish its goal?

Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money, materials, and services, Habitat for Humanity© builds homes with the help of the homeowners. Houses are sold at no profit to partnering families, and no-interest mortgages are issued over a fixed period. Currently, a Habitat house in Sierra Vista area costs approximately $60,000-$80,000 Small monthly payments, including mortgage payments, taxes, and insurance are repaid over 15 to 25 years and deposited into a revolving "Fund for Humanity" which supports the construction of more homes.

What do partnering families contribute?

Habitat for Humanity© is not a give away program, but rather a joint venture in which those who benefit from the housing ministry are involved in the work at various levels. Each homeowner family is required to invest either 250 or 400 "sweat equity hours"; the number of hours to be invested depends on the number of adults 18 years or older who will be residing in the home. This reduces the cost of the house, increases the pride of ownership among family members, and generates stronger relationships in the community.

How many homes have been built by Habitat for Humanity Sierra Vista?

Since 1994, 15 homes have been completed. Habitat for Humanity© Sierra Vista Area, Inc. had the groundbreaking on our 16th home on June 27, 2009.

Can my family get a home through Habitat for Humanity©?

We are currently not accepting new applications. To qualify, families must be low income and fit into 30% to 60% of the median income for Cochise County with a sliding scale dependent on number of family members. They must also live in substandard housing. To get on the list for an application, please contact the office.
